It’s vital that you repair a windshield crack. That crack can be dangerous, even along the edge of the windshield. Not only is the structure of the windshield weakened, making it more vulnerable to shattering, but sunlight can reflect off the crack into your eyes. It’s much cheaper to repair a windshield crack than replace the entire windshield, which probably won’t be covered under your insurance. Doing it yourself makes things even cheaper.
Tools and Materials
- Spoon
- Sponge brush
- Bug spray
- Rubbing alcohol
- Water
- Bowl
- Salt
- Krazy glue
- Cotton swabs
- Scissors
Step One - Preparation
Start by cleaning the windshield fully inside at out. Wash it with soap and water. Push a leather chamois into the edges of the windshield, which is where dirt and grime can accumulate.
After this, use glass cleaner on the area, applying and wiping with paper towels. This will take out any grease around the area, leaving you ready to repair the windshield crack.
Step Two - Materials
You need to make a solution with ½ cup of water mixed with 1 tablespoon of salt in a bowl. To this you should add 1 teaspoon of bug spray and then 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol.
Mix all these together until the salt has completely dissolved.
Step Three - Application
Take a sponge paintbrush and dip it in the solution. Rub the liquid down into the windshield crack and allow it to dry. Add a second coat. You’ll need to keep applying coats to repair the windshield crack. When you’ve finished, leave the liquid to dry for 2 hours. When you look at it after that, the crack should be gone. If it hasn’t apply several more coats of the liquid with the sponge paintbrush until the crack disappears.
Step Four - Glue
You can also use glue to repair a windshield crack. For this you’ll need to use Krazy glue, which gives the very best results in the procedure. Be aware, however, that this is only a temporary repair.
You also need to have glue remover on hand. If the glue gets on your hands or on other parts of the windshield it will bond very tightly. Remember that, depending on the size and position of the crack in the windshield, it might not pass a vehicle inspection in your state.
Step Five - Applying Glue
Start by using the glue in the inside of the windshield. Use a pair of scissors to snap off the top of the tube of Krazy Glue and begin to apply to the crack, working downward from the top. You’ll need to squeeze the tube lightly to keep glue coming. Spread the glue using a cotton swab and remove any excess glue with another cotton swab.
When you’ve done this, move to the outside of the vehicle. Again, use cotton swabs to spread the glue within the crack and to remove any excess. Allow the glue to dry. If any glue has spilled elsewhere, use glue remover on it.
