Oil Change Parts

Whenever you change your own oil, there are a number of oil change parts that you will need to complete the job. As with any do it yourself job, be sure to check the owner's manual for any special instructions or requirements before getting started.

In order to change your oil, you will need the following: Plenty of clean rags: You probably have some old t-shirts or towels laying around that would make perfect oil chaning rags. If not, most auto parts stores and home improvement stores carry rags. An oil drain pan: Be sure to buy a drain pan that will hold all of your drained oil. If you are not sure how much your car holds, check your manual. Oil: Make sure that you buy enough oil. To be safe, buy one more quart than you think you might need. Ratchet and socket for your oil pan drain plug: A ratchet and socket is ideal for this job. Strap wrench or appropriate wrench required to remove oil filter: Traditionally, oil filters can be hand tightened, however, some cars use cartridge style filters that require specialized tools. Torque wrench: Some might argue that a torque wrench is not required, but it is very helpful to have if you want to be sure that you are not over-tightening a drain plug. Jack and jack stands or ramps: ALWAYS use jack stands and an appropriate jack when lifting your vehicle. A set of ramps is a good substitute is you use wheel chocks. Wheel Chocks: A must have to ensure that your vehicle will not roll backwards off of the ramps or jack stands.

Under no circumstances should you get under your vehicle without utilizing appropriately placed jack stands or ramps and wheel chocks.  Please note this list of parts will differ slightly for some vehicles. Always check your owner’s manual first for any specific warnings or special requirements before attempting any sort of maintenance.
