4 Child Passenger Safety Tips for Safe Driving

October 20, 2010

If you have children, then child passenger safety is a top priority. Infant driving safety has taken tremendous leaps in the past three decades. Child car seats are sturdier today and there are varieties of models that can fit your particular needs. Following a few tips will help reduce injury.

1. Make Sure Children Are Secure

Securing children in a vehicle goes a long way toward protecting them, the driver and others. There are various devices available that will secure children, no matter their size. Check the tags on the car seat or call the manufacturer to make sure the seat you are considering will fit your vehicle. Purchase car seats for infants and toddlers, and booster seats and harnesses for older children. Make note of the sizing, follow directions for proper installation and use child restraints religiously.

2. Make Use of Child Safety Locks

Most vehicles are equipped with child safety locks that prevent children from inadvertently opening the door while the vehicle is in motion. This safety tool can be activated and deactivated by the driver.

3. Don't Drive with a Child on Your Lap

Driving with a child on your lap is a very dangerous practice. The presence of a child on the lap will prevent the driver from properly maintaining control of the vehicle.

4. Don't Allow Children to Sit in the Front Seat

Allowing small children to sit in the front seat can put them at risk of injury or death if the air bag is deployed. Small children should be secured in the back seat until they are the proper height.

Driving safely with children is a top priority with any parent, so make sure you know how to keep them safe to avoid accidents.
