DMV: How to Take an Ohio Permit Practice Test

Taking the Ohio permit practice test is highly encouraged. The reason for this is that the Ohio Revised Code of Chapter 4507 states that no person is allowed to drive a motor vehicle in Ohio public roads unless that person has passed the required examinations and secured an Ohio driver license from the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Ohio Drivers License Requirements

1. Obtain a documentation to prove the applicant's full legal name, birth date, and social security number.
2. Take two examinations - written and vision exams.
3. For applicants with medical conditions, they need to provide answers regarding their medical conditions and the examiner will explain to applicants the steps that are needed to be done. There is also a form to be given - form BMV 2058, which should be filled out by a medical doctor.

The Written Exam

Applicants are required to pass a written exam that covers two parts - the Ohio traffic signs and motor vehicle regulations.

• The Traffic Signs: This consists of 20 multiple questions. To pass this exam the applicant needs to obtain 75% corrects answers which is equivalent to 15 correct answers. This exam focuses on the highway traffic signs, warnings, signal devices and directions.

• The Motor Vehicle Regulations: This consists of 20 multiple choice questions where the applicant needs to obtain 15 correct answers or 75% correct of the total questions. The topics on this exam include safety rules of the road, Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) regulation and motor vehicle laws.

The questions included on the written test are taken from the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws. This is available online or through any Ohio local office.

The Vision Examination

Two areas will be tested when an applicant takes the vision exam - the acuity and horizontal fields. The acuity gauges the person's sharpness or clarity in seeing objects. In general, the minimum vision to get unrestricted driving privileges is to have a 20/40 vision for both eyes.

The Horizontal Field gauges an individual's amount of field that he or she can see in degrees. To obtain a license, the applicant must have not less than 115 degrees. To get unrestricted license, one must have a temporal horizontal field for each eye of 70 degrees.
