Drivers License Renewal Online and Offline

Although not all states allow drivers license renewal online, many DMVs do permit you to request a new license without paying visit to the DMV office. When renewing your drivers license, it is important to initiate the renewal request before the license expires. This will help ensure you do not incur additional fees for attempting to renew an expired license. Many states also require that you apply in person to renew a license that has already expired.

Collect the Necessary Documentation

Even if you're applying for a license renewal online, you still need proof of identification. This can be done with a Social Security number, information from your birth certificate, a passport number or several other pieces of identification as well. Different states have different requirements concerning the number of pieces of identification required and the types that are permitted, so it's a good idea to prepare at least three types of identification.

You will need to fill out the appropriate online forms. These may require additional information that you need to obtain from your current or expired license. Additionally, you may be asked to submit a digital photograph of yourself at a specific resolution and size for the new license card.

The DMV also charges a nominal fee to create a new license card. Be prepared to make a payment for this service online.

Locate Your State's DMV Site

Each state has a unique DMV website. Search for your state's DMV site online and locate the section regarding license renewals. In some cases, your DMV may not allow you to renew your license online; gather your materials and make a trip to the closest branch of the DMV.

If you can complete the application online, download the appropriate form to fill out. Once complete, submit it according to the DMV instructions. You may be able to scan and submit the form online via email, or you may be required to print the completed form and mail it to the local DMV office directly. In either case, follow the instructions on your DMV website as closely as possible.

After having completed the license renewal request, your DMV will issue you a temporary license card. These may be available online for you to print and carry with you while your new official license card is in production. Several business days later, the DMV will have completed your new license card and will mail it to you at your registered address.

It is important to note that most DMV offices require that you visit in person if you need to make any changes to the information on your license, including physical attributes, address and name.
