The Ford C-Max debuted for 2013 as the manufacturer's first hybrid-only line. With a base price of $25,995 it's touted as the country's most affordable mass-produced gas-electric vehicle. The spacious five-door hatchback is available as a conventional Hybrid; a plug-in hybrid variant is known as the Energi.

The C-Max Hybrid's 2-liter four-cylinder and electric motor produce 188 horsepower and a touted 620-mile range. The EPA estimates combined fuel economy of 47 mpg, but many leading automotive publications have disputed this claim. With its rear 64/40 seats folded down, the C-Max offers an impressive 52 cubic feet of cargo space; this drops to 25 cubic feet with the seats up.

Under the C-Max's hood was a 2-liter four-cylinder engine that produced 141 horsepower and 121 pound-feet of torque. With the supplemental electric motor, the C-Max's total output jumped to 181 horsepower. The hybrid system connected to a continuously variable transmission that delivered power to the front wheels.
