Generations

The first Ford Focus—introduced in 2000—was a major improvement on the Escort it replaced. Praised for its handling and European design, the Focus became a serious player in the compact market. A second generation received less acclaim, but the Focus recently regained its status as a compact contender with its 2012 redesign.

The current model features stylish bodywork, a fuel-efficient engine, high-quality interiors and the same type of above-average handling characteristics that caught everyone’s attention in the original Focus.

Major changes included:

The first generation Focus made Ford a serious contender in the compact market. The Focus was available in many different body styles and trim levels over the years, including the S, SE, ST and ZTS sedans, ZX3 and SVT 3-door hatchbacks, ZX5 and SVT 5-door hatchbacks and ZTW and ZXW wagons.

There were several different engines offered in the Focus, including an array of 2-liter four-cylinders producing anywhere from 110-170 horsepower, as well as a 151-hp 2.3-liter four-cylinder found in the 2005-2007 Focus ST. The 2002-2004 Focus SVT models delivered sporty performance with their high-output 170-hp 2-liter four-cylinder engine. Interior space was abundant on hatchback and wagon models, especially being a compact.
