One the longest-running models in the history of autodom, the GMC Yukon XL was known as the Suburban from 1936 to 1999. Along with its Chevrolet twin—still called Suburban—the Yukon XL is the largest SUV you can buy, with room for up to nine passengers and a stunning cargo capacity of 137 cubic feet. The current-generation XL debuted in 2007 along with the rest of the Yukon line.

The heavy-duty 2500 model carries a standard 6-liter V8 with 352 horsepower. Opting for ultra-plush Denali trim gets you a 6.2-liter version good for 403 horses. Either way, towing capacity approaches 10,000 pounds.

Major changes included:

A more refined Yukon XL arrived for 2007 with a smoother ride, tighter handling and a bit better fuel economy. Brawnier than the family-oriented 1500 version, the 2500 received a 6-liter V8 with 403 horsepower, topping the previous generation's huge 8.1-liter unit. It carries on in this form today, offering nearly 10,000 pounds of towing capacity and seating for up to nine.

Major changes included:

GMC ditched the Suburban moniker in favor of Yukon XL for its redesigned behemoth, but kept the heavy-duty 2500 variant. An available 8.1-liter V8 debuted in the second season, the largest engine offered in the model's history. Towing ability increased over the years, aided by the Quadrasteer four-wheel steering system starting in 2003, which improved stability under load and cut the turning radius by eight feet.
