February 10, 2012

You're looking to convert your truck to electric, but you don't know where to look or what to buy in electric truck conversion kits. This article will list the 4 most popular conversion kits for trucks. These kits are as follows:

  • The AK2124 Basic Chevy S-10 conversion kits from EVparts.
  • The AK2125 Deluxe Chevy S-10 conversion kit, also from EVparts.
  • KTA Services offers their mid-sized truck conversion package.
  • EV Trans Portal has a number of resources available to the electric truck converter.

It's important to remember that only when you buy complete electric car conversion kits are you assured of having all of the electric car parts you will need to perform the conversion. Some kits will have the batteries and battery rack included, others won't. Either way this information will be clearly available and visible. Charge time for batteries is 8 hours.

EVParts AK2124

This kit is complete except for the batteries. 20 6-Volt golf cart style batteries are required to supply the 120 Volts that this kit operates on. Top speed is a very acceptable 75 Miles Per Hour. Range is 35 to 45 miles, depending on the type of batteries used. This kit requires no further modification if the engine being replaced is the 2.5 liter engine. If you have the 2.8 liter engine, you must use the flywheel from a 2.5 liter and change the motor mounts to the 2.5 liter type. Priced at $8000, this kit will also fit a large number of other vehicles. EVParts supplies very detailed assembly instructions.

EVParts AK2125

This kit is also complete except for the 24 6-Volt batteries required to energize the 144 Volt heavy duty motor. The added Voltage and battery count increases the range on this kit to 40 to 60 miles. Top speed is still about 75 miles per hour. Variances due to driving style and conditions are to be expected.

KTA Services

KTA offers a kit for small and mid-sized pickups.  For about $8300 you get the full kit with batteries. Again, range and speed will vary with driving style, load and conditions. Average top speed is about 65 miles per hour with a range of up to 60 miles. Upgraded batteries will give longer range. KTA also sells a wide range of books and dvd's to use in conjunction with the instructions supplied with their electric car kits.

EV Trans Portal

This isn't a maker or supplier of a kit. Instead this is a site where you can go to fully research the conversion process from learning how by taking a class online, to a listing of companies that do offer electric truck conversion kits. Some of the information available on this site is vehicle conversion information for the US Department of Energy. One of the pieces of information available is how to have your electric vehicle conversion certified for use.

Finding the right electric truck conversion kit doesn't have to be hard. Knowing what you have and what you want are the hardest part of the process. With inclusion of the informational portal, you have all of the information you need at your fingertips. The Electric Auto Association is another excellent source of information.
