Hyundai’s first foray into the US market began in 1986 with the introduction of the Excel. With an affordable price point, the car was an immediate success with American buyers. In 1988, Hyundai introduced the Sonata, marking the company’s introduction into the sedan market. Like the Excel, the Sonata was a popular mid-sized vehicle with an affordable price-point.
In the 1990s, the company experienced it fair share of problems, fighting some difficult perceptions about their reputation. Hyundai fought hard to improve their production lines and repair their image. Their efforts paid off and the company began to build a new reputation – one of quality. Then in 1998, they purchased Kia, merging the two Korean auto manufacturers.
In 2001, Hyundai introduced the Elantra, which was heralded for its reliability, style, and overall quality – which continues today. Since then Hyundai has produced a line of dependable, award-winning vehicles which are affordable and attractive. Today, Hyundai’s list includes a full line of 22 models, including the ever-popular Santa Fe SUV, Sonata sedan, and Elantra (which comes in several available styles).
Hyundai offers every style of vehicle on the market today, including hybrids. The Genesis (available as a coupe or sedan) has quickly become a popular vehicle, while the Accent remains a reliable subcompact with high mileage. All told, Hyundai’s future looks bright, and if it’s anything like the recent past it’s likely to be filled with awards and acclaim.
