Overview

Jeep practically invented the upscale SUV with its Wagoneer, which became increasingly plush during a three-decade production run. (You might recall vinyl "wood grain" trim on later models.) The large SUV was renamed the Grand Wagoneer with the introduction of a smaller Wagoneer in 1984.

The Grand Cherokee effectively replaced the aging Grand Wagoneer in 1993 with modern approach to 4x4 design—it used car-like unibody construction, for instance. Currently in its fourth generation, the rugged Jeep Grand Cherokee is on track to match the Grand Wagoneer’s long production life.

Major changes included: Now in its third generation, the Grand Cherokee raises the bar by offering Quadra-Drive II AWD, rear-seat DVD player, and an optional 5.7 liter HEMI V8 engine. It is available as Laredo, Limited, Overland, and SRT-8 trims. A 3.7 liter V6 engine and 5-speed automatic transmission come standard.
