The latest AMG C63 is the top-of-the-line C-Class model, re-engineered by AMG, the tuning division of Mercedes-Benz. The handcrafted V8 is finely tuned for high performance and follows AMG’s "one man, one engine" assembly principle. The distinct, throaty roar typical of AMG engines gives the driver the sensation of being behind the wheel of a race-prepped touring car.
What's New for 2016
The new biturbo V8 -- closely related to the engine in Mercedes-Benz's AMG GT -- produces more power while consuming 32 percent less fuel than last year’s model. The coupe version receives cosmetic upgrades including strikingly flared wheel arches, and increased track width and larger wheels for a more muscular look.
Choosing Your C63 AMG
Both the sedan and coupe come with an AMG handcrafted biturbo V8. The sedan has a 4-liter 469-horsepower engine while a 6.3-liter 451-horsepower motor powers the coupe. A seven-speed automatic transmission is standard, as are dynamic highlights such as a sport suspension and AMG-specific driving modes offering a choice between Comfort, Sport, Sport + and Individual. Adaptive brakes, LED headlights, tire pressure monitoring and attention assist enhance safety.
Mercedes-Benz's signature luxury and comfort is coupled with driver-focused cabin featuring exclusive AMG instrumentation. Standard tech and audio details include dual high-resolution screens, touchpad controls and Bluetooth. The coupe gets a Harman Kardon LOGIC7 sound system, while there's a Burmester Premium Surround Sound system for the sedan.
A Multimedia Package is available with a rearview camera and navigation, and notable options are geared towards adding an AMG racing edge to the sedan’s interior and exterior. For the sedan, options include:
- AMG Head-Up Display, which projects an 8-inch-wide virtual image of information that "floats" over the car's hood in the driver's natural field of vision so eyes stay on the road.
- Carbon fiber interior and exterior trim
- AMG red seatbelts
- AMG Performance front seats
- AMG Dynamic Performance Exhaust
The coupe offers the Edition 507 Package with increased engine output (507 horsepower, 457 pound-feet of torque and 174 mph top speed), 19-inch forged-alloy AMG wheels and sportier AMG interior and exterior trim.
The AMG C63 sedan is pretty close to perfect as a standard offering. The 3-D Head-Up Display for $990 is worth adding as a glimpse into the future of technology. If opting for the coupe, the 507 Package may set you back nearly $10,000 but if you're a driving enthusiast, it's worth every penny.
