The high-performance five-passenger luxury SUV previously known as the ML63 AMG, is now called the AMG GLE63. The new GLE is practical and powerful. Styling consisting of a twin-blade radiator grill, black trim details and dual exhausts gives it an AMG racing-look pedigree that's evident from a mile away, but the AMG tweaks are more than skin deep. The real excitement lies not in its sporty, rugged exterior, but in what lies inside the passenger cabin and under the hood.
What's New for 2016
Besides the new name, the model gets a revamped interior with better quality materials. It’s hard to believe Mercedes-Benz can do a better interior, but it has done so for this model. The new Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE63 engine is more powerful while the chassis was revised for better driving dynamics and handling. The model now comes in three variations: 4Matic, Coupe and S.
Choosing Your Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE63
The AMG 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 engine is even more powerful than before -- now 557 horsepower -- without sacrificing fuel efficiency. The improvements to engine power keep gas consumption in the same range as last year’s model. The sporty S-Model engine is further tuned to rate at 585 horsepower.
The signature engine note of the hand-built AMG engine will vary according to the DYNAMIC SELECT transmission mode selected, which range from subtle growl in COMFORT mode to “hang on for the ride” in SPORT+ mode.
Standard equipment includes all wheel drive, safety features like collision prevention assist, adaptive brake attention assist, xenon headlamps, AMG decals and lettering throughout, a glass sunroof, sports pedals with rubber studs for grip, and heated leather front seats.
An electronic parking aid with a camera and automatic parking assistance makes parking in tight spaces stress-free. The 14 speaker LOGIC7/Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound system, navigation with traffic and voice control, and telematics for roadside assistance and vehicle tracking round out connectivity amenities.
This model comes so well-equipped that optional features are few. Upgrades include a choice of Bang & Olufsen’s BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system or Harman Kardon’s Logic 7 surround sound system. The DISTRONIC PLUS option adds monitoring of traffic and other vehicles for accident prevention. Other exterior options include a carbon-fiber engine cover, two additional wheel options, a performance exhaust system, carbon fiber/black lacquer trim, brushed aluminum running boards and various exterior lighting details including an illuminated Benz star.
