OVERVIEW
To perfect its mid-size SUV, Mercedes-Benz invested $600 million in the Alabama factory which produces the ML350, and the result has been reams of positive press. Power wise, buyers can choose from either a gas 3.5L V6 (15/20 mpg with 2WD) or, for a $4000 premium, the 3.0L V6 BlueTEC diesel (18/25 mpg). Both engines are mated to a seven-speed automatic. Gas models come standard with 2WD, but all BlueTEC models are equipped with Mercedes' 4MATIC all-wheel drive, which works with the vehicle's electronic stability control to insure power is sent to the wheels with the most grip. With the 4MATIC system, towing capacity is a robust 7200lbs, while RWD models are rated at a still-respectable 4,600lbs. For the current generation M Class, Mercedes engineers went with a unibody design, and not the body-on-frame construction commonly seen on truck-based vehicles. The result is an SUV which exhibits minimal body roll and stays composed on rough pavement, but is better suited for the urban jungle than actual jungle. Interior quality is typical Mercedes. Touch points are soft and fit and finish is excellent, though some of the controls have been described as overly complicated. MSRP ranges from $46,490 for a 2WD gas model to $50,490 for an AWD BlueTEC.
