They call it 'The House That Speed Built' and the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG does not disappoint when it comes to that title. A combination of dazzling luxury and acceleration that will push you back into the cargo area, this king of the Mercedes-Benz line has it all.
What's New for 2016
The new S65 is getting a bit of a facelift for the new model year. Buyers will notice changes to the exterior of the car, but nothing too groundbreaking. The aesthetic changes this year and last were an attempt to set it apart from not only other models in the Mercedes-Benz family, but also its competitors. The engine and other features are almost all direct carryovers from last year.
Choosing Your Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG
There are myriad reasons why the Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG is special. This car has a look that reflects its power and handling. The lower bodywork attests to its performance pedigree with large mesh air intakes on the deep front apron that feature airflow-directing winglets or "flies." It has an overall presence that leave onlookers with the distinct feeling that the car is ready to pounce like a savannah cat about to chase down its prey.
Style without substance leaves you with an empty wallet and a lesser model of car. That can’t be said with the S65. Behind its power sits the handcrafted turbocharged 6-liter V12. AMG is known for performance and quality, and this engine is one of its best. With 621 horsepower and an acceleration to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, the S65 outperforms the competition. While the power is nice and delivers on a lot of fronts, the S65 does lack a bit in the economy. In this day and age of carbon footprints and other concerns, the 13 mph city and 20 mpg highway rating leaves a little bit to be desired.
Near the top of the Mercedes-Benz echelon, most features you would find in premium packages come as standard with the S65. Active multi-contour front seats with massage, PARKTRONIC with Active Parking Assist, power rear-side window sun blinds, ventilated and heated front seats, and a plethora of other amenities reflect the top-of-the-line status that this car holds.
The S65 has an MSRP of $224,650, so the slight cost of $1,950 for the Executive Rear Seat Package Plus is well worth the extra investment. There are a few optional upgrades offered by the dealer, but there isn’t too much this luxury vehicle doesn’t already offer.
