Generations

Nissan has sold its Versa compact car in the United States since the 2007 model year, but no version has received as much positive attention as the recently-introduced Note. The suffix may be new in this country, but its five-door body style should be familiar, as it was present in the car's first iteration. Its 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder motor is teamed with either a five-speed manual transmission, or an Xtronic continuously variable transmission (CVT), which allows the Note to hit 40 mpg highway and a best-in-class 35 mpg combined.

For 2014. Nissan is launching an all-new hatchback variant of its Versa -- the Versa Note. Under the hood is a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 109 horsepower and 107 pound-feet of torque. The standard transmission is a five-speed manual, but a continuously variable transmission is available.
