If you're selling a car with overdue registration, the car will be the responsibility of the new owner. You will no longer have any legal claim to, or responsibility for, the vehicle. The new owner of the car will be responsible for bringing it up to code and for paying any overdue fees or fines. Of course, the purchaser may want to negotiate having you pay the expense before they are willing to purchase it.
