The Outback is available with a 170-hp naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder with a six-speed manual transmission (or optional six-speed CVT), or a 3.6-liter six-cylinder with a five-speed automatic transmission. The CVT and automatic transmissions feature a manual mode with paddle levers on the steering wheel. Limited models feature leather seating, a 440-watt nine-speaker harman/kardon audio system, dual-zone automatic climate control and Bluetooth hands-free phone capability.
Major changes included: The Outback has been upped in performance (horsepower ranges from 168-250) and added its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, which is designed to optimize traction. Also, new safety technology has been added including standard front side impact air bags and side curtain air bags. The engine in the new Outback is now lower, which decreases the center of gravity allowing for a more comfortable ride and smooth, easy handling.

Major changes included: Based on the third-generation Legacy, the Outback is equipped for off-road driving with features such as 15? tires, fog lamps and speed-sensitive steering. The model gives the option of a 2.5L automatic engine or 2.2.L manual with hill holder clutch (eventually replaced with 2.5L across the board). A SUS (Sport Utility Sedan) trim was launched in 2000.
