The Matrix is available in two front-wheel drive trim levels (Base and S) and one all-wheel drive trim level (S). The 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine found in the Base trim produces 132 horsepower, while S trims are equipped with a 158-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. Available transmissions include a five-speed manual, four-speed automatic and a five-speed automatic with manual shift mode. Every Matrix is equipped with 16-inch wheels, heated exterior mirrors, air conditioning, cruise control and a CD player with MP3 capability. Standard safety features include Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with integrated traction control, anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, front side-impact airbags, front and rear curtain airbags, front active head restraints and a tire pressure monitoring system.
Major changes included: The second generation Matrix received a styling update along with two new engines, including a 132-hp 1.8-liter four-cylinder and 158-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder. The 1.8-liter engine powers the base model, while the 2.4-liter can be found in the S and XRS trims. A 5-speed manual transmission comes standard in the base model, with a 4-speed automatic as an option. Both a 5-speed manual and 5-speed automatic are offered on the S and XRS models. All-wheel drive is also available on the S model. The Matrix boasts 19.8 cubic feet of cargo space with all the seats in place and 61.5 cubic feet when the seats are folded down.
