For each major redesign, a vehicle is said to begin a new "generation."

The Matrix is available in three front-wheel drive trim levels (Base, S and XRS) and one all-wheel drive trim level (S). The 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine found in the Base trim produces 132 horsepower; all other trims are equipped with a 158-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. Available transmissions include a five-speed manual, four-speed automatic and a five-speed automatic with manual shift control. Every Matrix is outfitted with a comprehensive group of standard safety features, including Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with integrated traction control, anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, front side-impact airbags, front and rear curtain airbags, front active head restraints and a tire pressure monitoring system.

The following model years make up the most recent Toyota Matrix generations:
2003 - 2010 Toyota Matrix
Major changes included: The first generation Matrix was offered with two 1.8 liter engine options in base, XR, and XRS trims. All wheel drive was available. The 2005 refresh brought a slight redesigned fascia and an upgraded instrument panel. 2009--: The second generation Matrix is offered in base, S, and XRS trim levels. A 1.8 liter 4-cylinder powers the base model, while a 2.4 liter 4-cylinder engine powers the S and XRS trims.
