Generations

In 2012, Toyota added the subcompact Prius c, available in four different trims, to their line of hybrid vehicles. This smaller version of the Prius is 19 inches shorter in length than the regular model, yet passengers lose only an inch or so of leg room.

The Prius c also has a smaller powertrain with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors paired to a continuously variable transmission for a total output of 99 horsepower. Thanks to its light curb weight, estimated mileage for the Prius c comes in at 50 mpg in combined driving.

Major changes included:

The Toyota Prius c hit showrooms in 2012 as a more compact alternative to the company's Prius hatchback. Under the Prius c's hood was a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with 73 horsepower and 82 pound-feet of torque, while two electric motors chimed in to push total output to 99 horsepower. This power traveled through a continuously variable transmission before being delivered to the front wheels.
