Toyota Prius HB I
For the 2009 model year, Toyota designated the standard Prius as the Toyota Prius HB1. This base model packed a bunch of high tech standard features into the base package, but the rumored “next generation” Prius came only with the 2010 model. That said, there is no longer a $21,000 MSRP for a standard Toyota Prius. That base price is now $22,000. For that, however, you do get some modifications and improvements that make a $1,0000 increase in base retail price seem very, very reasonable.
Firstly, there is no exterior badging or trim treatments that differentiate a top-of-the-line Prius from the base model. The sole difference is the larger 17” wheels and tires on the more expensive models. For 2009, the base HB I model Prius came equipped with 15” wheels and tires. For 2010, it still does, but it’s now labeled HB II on Toyota’s web site.
This is the so-called and much advertised 3rd generation Prius. The engine size has been increased to 1.8 liters over the 1.5L of the 2009 Prius. New, more efficient batteries are featured for 2010, as well as refinements to the Hybrid Synergy drive that increases city mileage economy up to 50 mpg. The body for 2010 is also 1 inch wider and 1 inch shorter than in 2009, providing more interior room and a squatter stance than previous Prius models.
Standard features include electronic stability control tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio and climate controls, the Touch Tracer system, the hybrid informational display, auto up/down power windows on all four windows, the well-known push-button start, and cruise control. Inside, there’s also the CFC-free automatic climate control with electric compressor, dust and pollen filtration mode, and humidity sensor. The sound system is an AM/FM/MP3 CD player with six speakers and satellite radio capability.
There are three option packages for the 2010 Prius models, but none of them are offered on the base model Prius, again designated II for 2010.
