Toyota pioneered the compact crossover segment when it introduced the RAV4 in 1996. Nearly 20 years later, the model still has plenty of market share -- and will claim a bit more thanks to the all-electric RAV4 EV. The front-wheel drive vehicle is available only in California, and gets MPGe ratings of 78 city and 74 highway from its 154-horsepower electric motor and 41.8-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. The weight of that power pack swells the RAV4 EV to 4,032 pounds, but the green machine will cover an EPA-calculated 103-mile range while producing zero emissions.

Major changes included:

In 2012, Toyota released the first generation of its RAV4 EV -- an all-electric version of its popular RAV4 crossover. On the outside, the RAV4 EV borrowed its design from its gasoline-powered sibling, but with a more aerodynamic front end to keep drag to a minimum. Under its hood, the RAV4 EV used a 115 kW electric motor that churned out 154 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of maximum torque in its Sport mode.
