Kansas Bill of Sale Form: How to Get One, Fill It Out, and the Required Information

If you want to sell a  vehicle in Kansas, a bill of sale will be required in order to complete the transaction with the buyer. A bill of sale, along with the vehicle's certificate of title, will be needed by the buyer of the vehicle before he or she can have the title registered in his or her name. Fortunately, you can get a free bill of sale form and use it for the transaction.

Where to Get a Bill of Sale Form

A bill of sale form is easy to find online, and there are many places on the web where you can download and print out a template to use for the document. You can use a search engine to find bill of sale forms that you can use by entering terms like "car bill of sale form" or "bill of sale template." The search engine should then display links to many sites where you can download the form you need.

In lieu of a standard vehicle bill of sale, you can use the Kansas Department of Revenue - Division of Vehicle's (the Kansas version of the DMV) Form TR-11 "AFFIDAVIT OF PURCHASE PRICE" to document the transaction of a car purchase between the buyer and seller. However, in order to protect yourself (especially if you are receiving payments on a vehicle), you should use both a notarized bill of sale form and the Form TR-11. Information Needed on a Bill of Sale Form

There is no specific format required for a vehicle bill of sale in Kansas, and most form templates for car purchases on the Internet will work just fine. However, any bill of sale template that you use should include the following information at a minimum:

  • Name and address of the buyer
  • Name and address of the seller
  • Date of the transaction
  • The odometer reading of the vehicle
  • The sales price for the vehicle
  • A description of the vehicle being sold
  • The VIN number of the vehicle

In addition to the required information, you may want to consider a bill of sale form that clearly lays out the terms and conditions for any warranty (or lack thereof) offered on the vehicle. If you plan to allow the buyer to make payments on the vehicle, you should also include language in the bill of sale that makes it clear a balance is owed on the vehicle.

Filling Out the Bill of Sale Form

Completing the information on a bill of sale form is fairly easy and straightforward. In most cases, you'll simply need to fill in the blanks with the required information. If possible, try to find bill of sale forms that allow you to type in the information on your computer screen and then print out the completed form.

If you download a bill of sale form that you will fill out by hand, make sure that all information on the form is written legibly and is easy to read. Finally, if you're going to have the bill of sale notarized, make sure that the template form includes an area for a Notary Public statement entry and stamp.
