Learn more about the Audi A8: Audi A8 Reviews, Pricing, Specs and more »
If you are shopping for a used Audi A8, they can be difficult to find in certain areas of the country (especially in those areas that receive considerable snowfall), but a well-maintained example can be a very satisfying car to purchase and own. Competing in the same premium luxury car segment as the BMW 7-Series and the Mercedes S-Class, the Audi A8 has been sold in the US since the 1998 model year, and the general characteristics of this flagship model have generally remained the same ever since. For example, in the US, the A8 has always been offered with a V-8 engine, Quattro all-wheel drive (although front-wheel drive was standard initially), an aluminum space frame construction, leather seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, an upgraded audio system and numerous electronic convenience features. In fact, due to its relatively lighter weight (thanks to the extensive use of aluminum), and its famed Quattro system, the A8 maneuvers like a much smaller sports sedan. The A8 was completely redesigned for the 2003 model year, when the Quattro system became standard equipment and a 6.0L 12-cylinder engine option became available in the US. Due to a more aggressive marketing campaign in North America, the A8 became a more popular car within its luxury segment - which means that the 2003 to 2009 versions are more plentiful on the used car market. Two versions of the A8 deserve honorable mention: the S8 and the A8L. The S8 version is a sportier version, including a higher-output V-8 engine, a firmer suspension, the Quattro system, larger brakes, wheels and tires, along with special interior touches. The A8L is the stretched version of the A8, with five more inches of rear-seat legroom. Both were produced in very limited numbers, so expect to pay a higher premium for either version. Before you buy a used Audi A8, you should carefully research the vehicle history report and the maintenance records, and make sure that the car has been inspected by a certified mechanic.
