If you want to stick to a tight budget, but you are still interested in buying a mid-sized luxury SUV, one option for you to consider is a used Mercedes-Benz M-Class. This model first hit the market in 1998, and the most recent version, the W164, is still in production. It was designed to run like a standard high performance sports car while maintaining the luxurious comfort of the extra room afforded by larger SUV type vehicles. There are currently three trims of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class in production, the ML350, the ML350 BlueTEC, and the ML450 Hybrid. The ML350 comes with a 3.5 liter 24 valve V-6 engine that runs at 268 horsepower. The ML350 BlueTEC trim comes with a more powerful 3 liter turbocharged 24 valve V-6 engine that runs at 210 horsepower. With the most powerful engine of the three, the ML450 Hybrid comes with a 3.5 liter DOHC 24 valve V-6 engine that runs at 355 horsepower. With such powerful engines, these SUVs are not the best choice for people who want fuel-efficient vehicles. The ML350 only gets 15 miles per gallon in the city and 20 miles per gallon on the highway; and the ML350 BlueTEC is only marginally better with 25 miles per gallon on the highway and 18 miles per gallon in the city. Even the ML450 Hybrid trim gets only 24 miles per gallon on the highway and 21 miles per gallon in the city, a disappointing figure for a hybrid vehicle.
