Interested in a used Volvo XC90? Introduced for the 2003 model year, the XC90 represented Volvo’s entry into the mid-size premium sport utility market segment. Its standard equipment includes a full complement of typical Volvo safety features, among which are electronic roll stability control and integrated side curtain airbags for all three seating rows.
The XC90 was initially offered with a choice of two engines: A 2.5-liter, 208-HP inline five-cylinder was mated to a five-speed automatic transmission and available in either front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), while a 2.9-liter, 272-HP twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder with a four-speed automatic was available with AWD.
During 2005, a Yamaha-built, 4.4-liter, 311-HP V8 was added to the XC90 lineup. The V8, which uses a six-speed automatic transmission, is available only with AWD.
A mild facelift for the 2007 model year also brought a new 3.2-liter, 235-HP inline six-cylinder engine, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and available with either FWD or AWD, replacing the earlier five-cylinder models. Additionally, front and rear lighting assemblies and bumpers were revised, and exterior styling featured more color-coordination.
R-Design models, added during the 2008 model year, include larger-diameter wheels and tires, aluminum exterior and interior trim accents, unique leather upholstery and special badging.
Popular factory options include a “Premium Package,” adding leather upholstery, a power glass moonroof, power passenger seat, 6-CD changer and other convenience items. An optional “Versatility Package” offers third-row seating with separate climate and audio controls, as well as automatic suspension leveling.
XC90s sold in cold-weather regions are usually equipped with heated front seats and headlamp washers in a “Climate Package.” Most XC90s are equipped with AWD, standard on T6 and V8 models, although used five-cylinder and 3.2-liter six-cylinder FWD models can be found, especially in the southern and southwestern U.S.
The XC90 is rated among the best vehicles in its class for crash safety, and its interior offers a high degree of passenger/cargo space flexibility, although storage behind the third row seat is limited. Real-world fuel economy is average for the segment; expect combined city/highway fuel economy in the high teens.
