The 2019 Jaguar XJ envelops passengers in luxury, which is par for the course. What's unique about the XJ is its gorgeous styling and athletic handling characteristics. The XJ may be a modern sedan, but it exudes an old-school aura that capitalizes on Jaguar's rich heritage. Opting for the available V8 engine brings a muscular aural note and feel to the sedan that's uncommon for the segment.
What's New for 2019
A new special-edition model joins the lineup for 2019. The XJ50 is meant to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the XJ model. It's based off of the long-wheelbase variant of the XJ and can be fitted with a 340-horsepower supercharged V6 or a 470-hp V8. As a special-edition model, the XJ50 gets bespoke features, which include unique front and rear fascias, 20-inch wheels, gloss black trim, and distinctive badges.
Choosing Your Jaguar XJ
As the largest and most opulent sedan in Jaguar's arsenal, there are a copious amount of choices to explore when it comes to the XJ. To begin with, there are two wheelbases: one that measures in at 119.4 inches and another that's 124.3 inches long. Then, there are three engines to explore, all of which are supercharged. Lastly, the XJ is offered in six trims, following a simple ladder of more luxury features as you go higher up the pecking order.
The base engine is a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 that generates 340 hp and 332 pound-feet of torque. Despite the XJ's large stature, the base engine has a large amount of thrust, allowing the vehicle to accelerate to 60 mph from a standstill in just 5.7 seconds. The motor is also the most fuel-efficient offering for the XJ, as it's rated by the EPA to get up to 18 miles per gallon city, 27 mpg highway, and 21 combined.
Those seeking more performance have the option of choosing between two V8 engines. The "pedestrian" variant is a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 that generates 470 hp and 424 lb-ft of torque. Zero to 60 mph is even more impressive for the V8, as it takes just 4.9 seconds. Needless to say, the larger engine isn't as fuel efficient with ratings of 15/23/18 mpg (city/highway/combined).
Higher up the pecking order sits an even more powerful variant of the supercharged V8. Instead of 470 hp, the motor has been upgraded to crank out 575 hp and 517 lb-ft of torque. The beast of the engine helps the XJ get to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds, which is great when taking the sedan's large proportions into consideration.
All of the available engines are paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is a $2,900 option for models equipped with the supercharged V6 engine.
There are six trims to choose from for the XJ:
CarsDirect Tip
With 575 horses on tap, we're sure the XJR575 is worth every penny of its price tag, but it's probably overkill for the majority of consumers. The fact that there's a $47,000 difference between the base R-Sport and XJR575 in the 2019 Jaguar XJ lineup is also another reason to go with one of the lower trims. In fact, the R-Sport and, for those that want more rear leg room, the XJL Portfolio are fine choices. The V8 engines are steeply priced and with 340 hp, it's not like the supercharged V6 is down on power. The Comfort Package, adaptive cruise control, and 360-degree camera are all options that are worth looking into.
