The words sporty and hybrid are not commonly seen in the same sentence, yet the Lexus CT 200h is far from common. Based on the Toyota Prius, the CT aims to provide great gas mileage without the unsatisfactory driving experience of most hybrids.
It's not a complete success in this regard, but the CT 200h does have precise handling and excellent fuel economy, along with the lowest base price in the Lexus lineup. With only 134 horsepower coming from the combined efforts of a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and electric drive motor, the fact that this hatchback is a hybrid cannot be hidden. Mated to a continuously variable transmission, the efficient powerplant delivers up to 43 mpg city and 40 mpg highway.
Exterior design is well done, giving the functional four-door hatchback a sporty look and spindle-style grille. Starting with the 2013 model year, Lexus has transformed the Premium trim level into an option package, leaving the base CT 200h as the only available trim. There is also an F Sport option group for those wanting a more aggressive appearance and stiffer suspension.
The interior has upscale style, yet is far from the most luxurious car to roll out of a Lexus factory. When the second-row seat is up, a CT 200h has 14.3 cubic feet of cargo space available. The rear seat features a 60/40 split fold-flat function that is easy to operate.
