2014 Chevrolet Sonic Overview

The Chevrolet Sonic is the only vehicle in its class built here in the United States. Larger than the Spark—Chevy’s smallest car in the lineup—the Sonic is available in both sedan and hatchback variants.

The Sonic's fuel efficiency equals or beats its competitors. And standard equipment includes lots of features that are pleasant surprises in this price bracket, including streaming Bluetooth audio and the MyLink infotainment system that allows for control of cell-phone-enabled apps. Aggressive pricing and nice styling make a hit for the "bow tie" brand.

What's New for 2014

Changes for the 2014 Sonic are relatively few. A number of new colors have been added, and Chevrolet has tweaked the content of various option packages.

Choosing Your Chevrolet Sonic

The Sonic is a front wheel drive vehicle available in both four-door sedan and five-door hatchback models. In fact, that's the first choice you'll make:

  • Sedan
  • Hatchback

Each features four trim levels:

The base LS comes with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder that cranks out 138 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. It achieves 26 mpg city and 35 mpg highway with a four-speed manual transmission or 25 mpg city and 35 mpg highway with a six-speed automatic.

It comes with Bluetooth and remote keyless entry, but don't expect some of the amenities modern car buyers have some to expect—windows are, for instance, manual.

Opt for an automatic transmission.

The LT adds extras like a satellite radio, power windows and a rearview camera. The 1.8-liter four-cylinder is standard, but a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine is optional. It also makes 138 horsepower, but there's more torque—148 pound-feet—a 5 mpg gain in highway fuel economy.

Opt for an automatic transmission.

The "luxury" version of the Sonic includes perforated leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, 17-inch aluminum wheels and voice recognition for phone connectivity.

Opt for an automatic transmission.

The RS is a performance-oriented model. The turbo engine is standard, as is a six-speed manual transmission and disc brakes all-around. Sport seats are upholstered in leather with suede trim.

Opt for an automatic transmission.

CarsDirect Tip

We'd skip the LS and opt for a mid-range LT or LTZ—they offer the best value in the Sonic lineup.
