GM's much-hyped 2014 Chevrolet SS high-performance sport sedan is finally upon us, and now the big rear-wheel-drive four-door with a Corvette engine lurking underhood has a price: the SS will start at $44,470 when it goes on sale this Fall.
As a competitor to the likes of the Ford Taurus SHO, Dodge Charger SRT8 and Hyundai Genesis R-Spec, the SS seems to hit all the right marks. Its Chevy LS3 smallblock V8 is pulled directly from the outgoing C6 Corvette, and the combination of RWD handling and a paddle-shifted six-speed automatic transmission should ensure the NASCAR-inspired sedan will be a joy to drive very, very fast.
With near-perfect weight distribution and a chassis based on the Australian-market Holden Commodore VF, the SS sits as a halo model atop Chevy's passenger car lineup. With 415 horsepower and 415 lb-ft. of torque on tap, Chevy promises 0-60 mph in 5 seconds flat.
For that roughly $45k, the SS comes in a single extremely well-equipped trim level. You'll find standard Chevy MyLink infotainment with built-in navigation, plus a color head-up display, standard leather with heated and ventilated front seats, a Bose surround sound system, and all manner of active safety technology.
While pricing may cause Chevy buyers used to Impalas and Malibus to do a double-take, the SS is a luxurious thoroughbred of a sport sedan, and we can't wait to get behind the wheel.
