It’s not exactly a minivan, and neither is it a hatchback—but it’s definitely not a crossover. Most shoppers would have a hard time defining what it is, and it's this lack of definition that makes the sporty Mazda5 a perfect match for many families.
What's New for 2014
The Mazda5 continues into 2014 without any changes of note.
Choosing Your Mazda5
All Mazda5 models come equipped with a 2.5-liter engine produces 157 horsepower. Two transmissions are offered—a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift mode.
When equipped with the manual transmission the Mazda5 earns 21 mpg city and 28 mpg highway; the city rating gains 1 mpg with an automatic transmission.
Buyers choose from three trim levels that range from basic to near-luxury:
Sport
Standard features include 16-inch wheels, power locks and window, a six-speaker sound system with USB ports, and remote keyless entry. The six-speed manual transmission is offered on Sport models only. The automatic transmission is optional.
Touring
The Touring model includes a standard automatic transmission, 17-inch wheels, a rear liftgate spoiler, fog lights, a painted front grill, Bluetooth, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and rear backup sensors.
Grand Touring
The top-of-the-line 5 features a moonroof, satellite radio, xenon headlight, automatic headlights, an anti-theft system, leather seats and heated front seats. The driver’s seat includes manual lumbar adjustment.
The Mazda5 is so well-priced that we recommend the Grand Touring—all those extra features represent an excellent value.
