Expert Rating

27 City / 35 Highway

Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

You can interpret our ratings in the following way:

5-Star: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.

1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

2014 MINI Convertible OVERVIEW

The frisky, fun-to-drive Mini raises the stakes on fun in its convertible form. What it lacks in passenger space, it makes up in panache. The three-position soft top is automatic and has a heated glass rear window. Inside, a giant center-mounted speedometer dominates the cozy cabin space.

There's theoretical space for four, but the interior and cargo space sacrificed for the convertible top rule this out as a family car. But who can think about practicality in a ride that’s so fun and fuel efficient?

What's New for 2014

The convertible carries over with an older design from 2013 model, but is expected to follow in the footsteps of the redesigned 2014 hardtop next year.

Choosing Your Mini Convertible

The Mini Convertible is available in three models notable for their increasing performance capabilities:

The base model uses a normally aspirated four-cylinder engine that makes 121 horsepower. It delivers excellent mileage: 28 mpg city and 35 mpg highway.

Cooper S

The S adds a turbocharger that boosts power to 181 horsepower. The loss in fuel economy is negligible: only 2 mpg city.

John Cooper Works

The 208-horsepower John Cooper Works is the ultimate performer in the bunch, but like the S doesn't penalize owners at the pump. It still gets 26 mpg city and 35 mpg highway.

A start stop button, Bluetooth and a USB port, air-conditioned glove box and mood lighting are standard on all MINIs. But they're only the beginning: MINI encourages customization with a claim of 10 million design variations.

Mini offers several packages in addition to its innumerable accessories and addable features. They include the following:

  • Cold Weather Package features heated power folding mirrors, washer jets and heated front seats.
  • Technology Package features a Harman Kardon sound system, satellite radio and Mini Connected Package.
  • Sport Package includes front fog lamps, dynamic traction control, sports seats and 17-inch wheels.
  • City Pack includes an alarm system, heated mirrors, auto-dimming mirrors, park distance control and an auto-dimming rear view mirror.

CarsDirect Tip

The higher the performance level, the less comfortable a MINI becomes, so be sure to test before you buy. We think the mid-range S strikes the right balance of performance, comfort and value.
