2014 MINI Roadster Overview

John Diether
Automotive Editor - March 12, 2014

All MINIs have a certain retro appeal, but none gets it more honest than the Roadster. The ragtop two-seater will remind you of a simpler time when sports cars were open-air featherweights built strictly for your amusement.

What's New for 2014

The MINI Roadster gained some important equipment last year, like a standard power top and wind deflector, but there’s nothing new to report for 2014.

Choosing Your MINI Roadster

The Roadster is a spinoff of the MINI Hatchback, but rides lower and offers more grip around corners. The Roadster also gets a standard Sport mode for snappier acceleration and steering response. MINI offers an abundant selection of wheels, graphics and trim materials to make customization a cinch.

The standard 1.6-liter four-cylinder produces 121 horsepower, and you can upgrade to a turbocharged version making 181 or 208 horsepower depending on the trim level. All models offer a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

As before, the Roaster is available in three flavors:

The entry-level Roadster comes with the normally aspirated engine, 16-inch wheels, leatherette seating, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity and HD radio. The optional Sport Package adds sports seats, hood stripes, foglamps, 17-inch wheels and dynamic traction control.

The S steps up to the 181-horsepower turbocharged engine and a firmer suspension, plus sport seats, alloy pedals, foglamps and a hood scoop. The available Sport Package adds xenon headlights to the equipment included in the Base package.

At the top of the performance ladder is the 208-horsepower turbo, an upgraded suspension, Brembo brakes, performance-tuned traction control, an aerodynamic body kit, specific cloth upholstery and piano black interior trim.

Most popular options are bundled into packages:

  • Cold Weather: Comes with heated mirrors (power folding), seats and headlight washers.
  • Premium: Adds keyless start, automatic headlamps, chrome interior trim, automatic climate control and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
  • Technology: Packs Harman Kardon surround sound, rear parking sensors, integrated smartphone apps and (oddly enough) a center armrest.
