Expert Rating

4.5 (Excellent)
MPG
24 City / 32 Highway

Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

You can interpret our ratings in the following way:

5-Star: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.

1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek OVERVIEW

The Crosstrek XV follows a familiar Subaru formula: Take a popular passenger vehicle—in this case an Impreza—raise its ride height, add some moderate off-road capabilities and mix with rugged styling. Whether used as an urban warrior or to traverse unpaved roads in the back woods, the Crosstrek is ready for duty.

Choose Your Subaru XV Crosstrek

The five-door Crosstrek is powered by a 148-horsepower 2-liter engine that earns 25 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. The continuously variable transmission (CVT)—optional on the Premium and standard on the Limited—comes with paddle shifters and a six-speed "manual" mode that mimics traditional gearshifts.

All Crosstreks have all-wheel drive, and come in two trim levels:

2.0i Premium

It might be called Premium, but this is the Crosstrek's entry-level model. A five-speed manual transmission with incline start assist is standard equipment, though most buyers will probably opt for the optional CVT.

Subaru throws in some upscale amenities like heated seats and a windshield wiper de-icer with basics like power windows, locks and mirrors, and manual air conditioning. A moonroof and navigation are optional.

2.0i Limited

The Limited trim adds a standard CVT, automatic climate control, a 4.3-inch LCD display screen, and a rearview camera. As on the Premium model, navigation and a moonroof are optional.

CarsDirect Tip

Choosing between the Premium and Limited comes down to budget—both represent good value in an outstanding vehicle that's almost everything to everyone.
