Originally intended as a limited-edition model, this sporty hatchback is now in its sixth generation and due for a major redesign for 2015. Yet its interior quality is still superior to many of its competitors in the same price range, while ride quality and comfort are excellent. What's New for 2014
Rather than adding new features for this model year, Volkswagen has scaled back on the GTI’s variations by offering only the four-door body style and limiting color choices to white, gray or black.
Choosing Your Volkswagen GTI
There are two trim levels for the 2014 GTI, both equipped with the same turbocharged 2-liter inline four-cylinder engine with a peak output of 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. The only choice here is which transmission you’ll choose:
- The standard six-speed manual transmission achieves fuel economy in the range of 25 mpg for combined driving.
- The available six-speed automated manual functions either as an automatic transmission or as a manual through the use of steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. This transmission also includes a launch-control system that provides smooth acceleration. Estimated fuel economy is 27 mpg in combined driving.
