Audi's mid-engine R8 continues as the brand's halo, a model that can hold its own against world's most exotic supercars. It's also one of the few cars of any type available with a V10 engine.
Power-folding heated mirrors are now standard across the board. There's a new sport exhaust system available on the V10.
Available as a two-passenger coupe or convertible, the R8 makes extensive use of aluminum and other lightweight materials to minimize performance-robbing bulk. The standard 4.2-liter V8 produces 430 horsepower and can be paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual, dubbed S tronic. Both transmissions are also available with the 5.2-liter V10, which achieves 525 or 550 horsepower depending on the trim level. The R8 comes standard with all-wheel drive, an adaptive sport suspension and summer performance tires on 19-inch wheels.
You have a choice of three trim levels: V8, V10, and V10 Plus:
Along with the V8 engine, you get heated power seats in leather and faux suede, full LED lighting, Bluetooth phone and audio, and a seven-speaker sound system with a six-CD changer and satellite radio. The available Convenience package adds a rearview camera, parking sensors and storage nets. The convertible V8 gets a power soft top and retractable rear window. Optional on both body styles are full leather upholstery, navigation and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.
Carries the V8's options as standard, plus the V10 engine and specific wheels and suspension tuning.
Comes as a coupe only with the 550-version of the V10. You also get carbon fiber body trim and carbon-ceramic brakes, both of which are optional on other models. To save weight, the V10 Plus carries a smaller fuel tank and does without the adaptive suspension and power seats.
The V10 Plus is designed for competition and can be a handful in everyday driving. The same can be said to a lesser extent of the regular V10. If you intend to use your R8 for actual transportation, you'll find the V8 more rewarding to own.
