The performance variant of Audi's A4 compact sedan, the S4 takes aim at accomplished sport sedans everywhere and the buyers who love them. With standard all-wheel drive and 333 horsepower on tap, the S4 is up to the task.
A new Prestige trim level replaces last year's option package of the same name.
At first glance, the S4 doesn't look appreciably different than the A4. Look closer and you'll find a lowered suspension, unique 18-inch wheels and subtle trim revisions. What's under the hood is far more compelling: a 333-horsepower supercharged 3-liter V6, which can paired with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automated manual transmission. Selectable driving modes, all-wheel drive and summer performance tires are standard across the board.
The S4 starts at the Premium Plus trim level and is now available in full Prestige trim as well.
Includes leather and faux suede upholstery, heated front sport seats with driver memory, a sunroof, xenon headlamps, LED running lights, Bluetooth phone and a 10-speaker sound system with satellite radio. The Technology package adds parking sensors, a review camera, an iPod interface, a DVD player, a web-based navigation system and WiFi capability with integrated apps. The High Gloss Black package comes with gloss black exterior trim and 19-inch titanium-finish wheels. A Bang & Olufsen surround-sound system is also available.
Gets the Technology package and the Bang & Olufsen system as standard, plus adaptive headlamps. The High Gloss package remains available. Exclusive to the Prestige is the Driver Assistance package, which add dynamic-assist steering and adaptive cruise control with stop and go capability.
For enhanced performance, both trim levels can get an adaptive suspension system and a sport differential that transfers power between the rear wheels. Other options include a Nappa leather interior and rear thorax airbags.
Adding the Technology package to the Prestige Plus doesn't make much sense in our view. For a few more dollars, you can upgrade to the Prestige and get all the Technology features and upgraded audio system, too. Since the S4 is, after all, a performance sedan, the adaptive suspension seems rather essential and is a bargain at $1,000.
