The BMW 2 Series serves as a slightly larger replacement for the discontinued 1 Series. Like its predecessor, the 2 Series is the smallest model in the lineup and comes in coupe and convertible form only. Small-car devotees who appreciate luxury and performance will discover a lot to like.
What's New for 2015
BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system is now available, and a convertible body style joins the lineup. The Track Handling package is also new.
Choosing Your BMW 228i
The 228i coupe and convertible carry a turbocharged 2-liter four-cylinder that delivers 240 horsepower, and BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system is available across the board. An eight-speed automatic is standard, but you can opt for a no-cost six speed manual on rear-drive models.
Standard equipment is what you would expect in an entry-level luxury coupe: automatic dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, Bluetooth phone and a 10-speaker sound system. Convertibles get a power soft top that operates at speeds up to 30 mph.
BMW offer a variety of packages to enhance luxury and performance. The Premium package adds common luxury car equipment like keyless access and ignition, a sunroof, satellite radio and power leather seats (also available separately). The Sport Line gets you all the Premium contents, plus a sport-tuned suspension, special interior trim and 19-inch wheels. There's also the M Sport, which comes with summer performance tires, sport seats, a sport steering wheel, a rear spoiler and (optional) upgraded steering, brakes and suspension components.
The Technology package bundles together a navigation system, upgraded dash displays and controls, and a suite of smartphone apps. For safety, there's the Driver Assistance package with parking sensor and a rearview camera. Cars equipped with both the Technology and Driver Assistance packages are eligible for Driver Assistance Plus, which adds lane departure warning and forward collision mitigation. You can also get heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and headlamp washers in the Cold Weather package.
The new Track Handling package can be added to any model and includes an adaptive suspension, 18-inch wheels with summer performance tires, and steering and braking systems borrowed from the 228i's high-performance sibling, the M235i.
We consider the Premium Package mandatory for buyers who want a proper luxury car experience. If your priority is performance, the M Sport and its optional upgrades make the most sense. The Sport Line splits the difference, providing an appealing blend of comfort and sportiness that feels about right for this class of car.
