The 2015 BMW 435i Gran Coupe tries to be all things to all people. It has seductive coupe lines, but four doors and a rear liftgate for more practicality. With a 32 MPG highway rating, it's efficient. Yet it packs more than 300 horsepower from a turbocharged six-cylinder engine, so it's certainly quick. It's BMW's way of saying you can have your cake and eat it too -- if you're prepared to pay.
What's New for 2015
The 435i Gran Coupe is new for the 2015 model year. It joins the 435i coupe and convertible in BMW's midsize coupe lineup of cars based on the well-regarded 3 Series family of sedans and wagons. That's where the Gran Coupe gets its 3-liter turbo six, mated exclusively here to an 8-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is available.
Choosing Your 435i Gran Coupe
The 435i Gran Coupe comes in a base trim, as well as three other "lines," or design groups with their own set of styling finishes, interior color and trim choices and wheels.
Base cars include standard 17-inch alloy wheels, SensaTec upholstery inside (BMW's code name for fake leather), a 40-20-40 split-folding rear seat that increases flexibility, steering wheel paddle shifters for the automatic, an auto start-stop function, wood interior accents, 8-way power front seats with driver's memory settings, and a nine-speaker audio system.
Sport Line gets blacked-out exterior trim, a choice of 18 or 19-inch alloy wheels and red interior accents with contrasting stitching.
Luxury Line offers more brightwork on the outside, on the grille and lower air intakes. Multi-spoke 18 or 19-inch wheels are available. Inside there is more chrome around the gauges and instrument panel and a choice of upgrades leather upholstery.
M Sport is the closest you can get to an "ultimate driving machine" in a 435i Gran Coupe. It offers special paint colors and M wheels, as well as more aggressive-looking front bumper and lower air intake. The interior gets an M performance steering wheel and standard sports seats. An M Sport Suspension is standard, and M Performance brakes are available.
The 435i M Sport is the closest thing to an M4 Gran Coupe you're going to get, so go get that route if you want the best performance. But the 435i Gran Coupe is much more about covering miles quickly and comfortably anyway, so you could really stick with the base trim and spring for options like the impressive navigation system or other advanced driving aids.
