The original luxury SUV, the Land Rover Range Rover represents the best the brand has to offer in terms of craftsmanship and sheer prestige. Along with abundant luxuries, you get indomitable off-road performance and a certain old-world charm that its competitors have yet to duplicate.
What's New for 2015
The Range Rover get minor equipment updates only.
Choosing Your Land Rover Range Rover
The Range Rover comes standard with full-time four-wheel drive with low range and Land Rover’s Terrain Response system, which optimizes traction for five driver-selected surface conditions. An upgraded version, known as Terrain Response 2, can sense road characteristics and adjust systems accordingly without driver intervention. It's available across the board and standard on upper-trim models. The five-passenger interior is festooned with fine wood and leather as only the British can do. An extended wheelbase is available for exceptional rear-seat comfort.
The standard supercharged 3-liter V6 delivers 340 horsepower. Buyers in the mood for performance can upgrade to a supercharged 5-liter V8 that achieves a stout 510 horsepower. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. All models benefit from an adaptive air suspension and automatic emergency braking.
The Range Rover is available in four main trim levels with various option packages within each:
Base
Carries the supercharged V6 engine and features such as heated power-folding mirrors, driver memory settings, tri-zone climate control, keyless ignition, a heated power-adjustable steering wheel, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera and 19-inch wheels. You also get a navigation system, Bluetooth phone and audio, and a 13-speaker Meridian sound system with satellite and HD radio.
HSE
Builds on the Base model with 20-inch wheels, foglamps, a panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming side mirrors, and upgraded leather seating with expanded front controls and heat in back. The Front Seat Climate Comfort package adds ventilated and massaging front seats and a refrigerated compartment. The Four Zone Climate Comfort package includes four-zone automatic climate control and ventilated rear seats with power adjustments.
Supercharged LWB
Rides on an 8-inch longer wheelbase and adds an extended panoramic sunroof and power rear sunshades.
All of the above can get the Vision Assist package, which adds the following features (if not already standard): Terrain Response 2, surround-view cameras, adaptive headlamps with automatic high-beam control, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and auto-dimming side mirrors. Individual options include an automated parking system, adaptive cruise control, soft-close doors, a towing package, a rear-seat entertainment system and a 19-speaker Meridian surround-sound system. The Base model can also get a panoramic sunroof (it's standard on the others).
Autobiography
Available in regular or extended length, the Autobiography comes standard with all the equipment and options available on the lower trims, including the V8 engine. You also get an extended leather interior and an ultra-premium 29-speaker Meridian sound system. The Rear Executive Class Seating package provides a rear center console and individual seats with memory, massage and numerous power adjustments. Long-wheelbase Autobiography models so equipped are eligible for the Black package, which adds upgraded leather and wood trim throughout the cabin, power-folding rear tables, rear footrests, a second refrigerated compartment and metal exterior trim.
The well-rounded HSE strikes us as the best overall value of the group, but you can make the case that an SUV like this requires no less than the V8 engine found in the Supercharged models. If you want an over-the-top combo of power and luxury, the Autobiography will deliver it without breaking a sweat.
