Choosing Your Mercedes-Benz GL550
Every GL550 is powered by a twin-turbo 4.7-liter V8 that packs 429 horsepower. The 4MATIC all-wheel drive system comes standard, as does a seven-speed automatic transmission. Adaptive suspension damper and 21-inch wheels complete the mechanical setup. With room for seven adults and up to 93 cubic feet of cargo space, the GL550 ranks in largest class of SUV.
Mercedes-Benz has assured that the GL550 will satisfy the most demanding buyers right out of the box. You get standard features like automatic soft-close doors, exotic wood trim, specially stitched leather, ventilated and massaging front seats, heated and cooled cupholders, and a 13-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound system. On the safety front, the GL550 is equipped with blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, a surround-view camera system and automated parallel parking.
The available Driver Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control and active collision-avoidance features. Buyers who like to hit the trails can order the On-/Off-Road Package, which includes a terrain selector, front underbody protection and low-range gearing.
Individual options include a panoramic sunroof, power-sliding second-row seats, a rear entertainment system and a trailer hitch so you can take advantage of the GL550's 7,500-pound towing capacity.
The GL550 is obviously a full-fledged luxury vehicle that needs no extras in order to coddle and impress. However, if you plan on exploring its considerable off-road potential, the On-/Off-Road Package is money very well spent.
