Like the rest of the M-Class, the ML63 AMG comes standard with all-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission. The difference lies under the hood, where the ML63 AMG sports a hand-built 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 with 518 horsepower. Zero to 60 mph happens in just 4.8 seconds, and the 63 AMG can tow up to 7,200 pounds, which puts it in a league with truck-based SUVs. Along with all that grunt come a sport-tuned suspension with adaptive stabilizer bars, 20-inch AMG wheels, ventilated sport seats in top-grade "designo" leather and exclusive styling details.
The 63 AMG offers numerous high-end features that cost extra elsewhere in the lineup. Every example gets heated and cooled cupholders, a 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system with DVD playback and an SD card reader, navigation with 10GB of audio storage, adaptive xenon headlamps with curve illumination, an automated parallel packing system, blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning.
The available Driver Assistance package offers adaptive cruise control and a full complement of collision mitigation technology. To experience the pinnacle of M-Class performance, you can order up the AMG Performance package, which adds a 550-horsepower version of the 5.5-liter, a higher top-speed limiter, red brake calipers, a carbon-fiber engine cover and (optional) 21-inch wheels.
Rounding out the 63 AMG are a number of individual options, including a panoramic sunroof, massaging front seats, a rear entertainment system and a premium Bang & Olufsen sound system.
The ML63 AMG is obviously well equipped from the start, though it feels incomplete without the panoramic sunroof installed. The AMG Performance package does what it promises, but you really can't appreciate its benefits this side of racetrack. Its most interesting cosmetic feature, the carbon-fiber engine cover, is available separate anyway.
