Expert Rating

31 City / 41 Highway

Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

You can interpret our ratings in the following way:

5-Star: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.

1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

2016 BMW 328d OVERVIEW

BMW's compact 3 Series has never been accused of hogging gas, so you can bet that the designated miser of the bunch delivers as promised. Thanks to its turbodiesel engine, the 328d shines as one of the most efficient luxury cars you can own.

What's New for 2016

The 328d gets a sleeker nose and more aggressive suspension tuning, while additional bright trim spruces up the interior.

Choosing Your BMW 328d

What distinguishes the 328d from its siblings lies under the hood: a 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine that delivers 45 mpg on the highway and 37 mpg in combined driving. With 180 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, the 328d is relatively quick for something so remarkably efficient.

The 328d comes in sedan and wagon form, the latter offering cargo space that’s just shy of a compact crossover. All-wheel drive is standard on wagons and optional on the sedan. The xDrive system reduces efficiency by about 2 mpg, which is why the wagon is rated at 35 mpg. As before, an eight-speed automatic does the shifting.

Standard features include power front seats with driver memory, 17-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof (wagon only), auto-dimming mirrors, HD radio, Bluetooth phone and audio, and wood or aluminum interior trim.

The available Premium package rounds out the 328d with leather upholstery, lumbar front seat adjustments, keyless ignition, satellite radio, a hands-free power liftgate or trunk lid, and a sunroof for sedans. The Cold Weather package adds heated seats all around, a heated steering wheel, and headlamp washers. A navigation system comes with the Technology package, which also offers a larger dash display, integrated smartphone apps, and a head-up display. The Lighting package gets you full LED exterior lighting and automatic high beams.

Individual options include an automated parking system, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and rear sunshades. Many features found in the option packages (e.g., sunroof, navigation, heated seats) are available on a standalone basis.

The M Sport version of the 328d receives 18-inch star-spoke wheels, a firmer suspension, an aerodynamic body kit, sport seats, and unique M Sport interior trim.

Turning to safety, the Driver Assistance package equips the 328d with a rearview camera and front and rear parking sensors. A Plus version of the same tacks on a surround-view camera system, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, speed limit data, active collision mitigation system, and (optional) adaptive cruise control.

CarsDirect Tip

The Premium and Driver Assistance packages bring equipment levels up to what you expect in this price class, so they are money well spent.
