For buyers who can't decide between a spacious luxury sedan and a sexy coupe, the BMW 640 Gran Coupe offers the possibility of having it all. The fastback four-door mixes practicality with stunning looks and a talent for effortless touring.
What's New For 2016
The Gran Coupe benefits from even finer interior tailoring and sharper front-end styling.
Choosing Your BMW 640 Gran Coupe
The Gran Coupe carries a turbocharged 3-liter six-cylinder with 315 horsepower, matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission with launch control. You also get standard 18-inch wheels and an adaptive sport suspension. BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system is available as an option across the board.
The standard equipment list reflects the Gran Coupe's position on the upper end of the luxury car market. Every example comes with an extended Dakota leather interior with driver memory, hard drive-based navigation, front and rear parking sensors, power-folding and auto-dimming mirrors, adaptive xenon headlights, and HD and satellite radio.
The available Executive package adds an extra measure of luxury with features like automatic soft-closing doors, four-zone climate control, ventilated front seats and concierge services. The M Sport Package enhances the Gran Coupe's sporting nature with larger wheels, more aggressive styling inside and out, and a higher top-speed limiter.
For safety, BMW offers the Driver Assistance Package, a bundle of advanced safety technology like lane-departure warning, a surround-view camera system, and (optional) adaptive cruise control with automatic braking and accelerating. The Cold Weather package adds heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel, while the Lighting package gets you LED headlamps with automatic high beams.
Finally, there's the M Sport Edition of the Gran Coupe, which includes virtually all the contents of the option packages except the heated rear seats and steering wheel.
Individual options include an upgraded suspension, infrared night vision, adaptive cruise control and a 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen surround-sound system. There's also a Black Accent package (starting at $4,000) that gives you access to a plethora of unique trim, colors and interior finishes.
Of all the optional equipment you can add to the 640 Gran Coupe, we consider the Driver Assistance package to be the most practical, and it's quite reasonably priced ($1,700-$2,900). If you want even more in the way of luxury or sportiness, we recommend upgrading to the M Sport Edition, which gives you nearly every available package feature for $5,300, a relative bargain.
