Expert Rating

4.5 (Excellent)
MPG
City / Highway

Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

You can interpret our ratings in the following way:

5-Star: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.

1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

2016 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD OVERVIEW

Fresh off last year's complete overhaul, the Silverado 3500HD boasts the raw power and strength you sometimes need to get the job done. Even so, it's a civilized beast with enough available features to do a luxury car proud.

What's New for 2016

Most configurations receive a new digital power steering unit for sharper handling. The MyLink infotainment system gets additional features, including greater smartphone integration. A remote locking tailgate is now available.

Choosing Your Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD

As before, the 3500HD comes with a three-person Regular Cab, a Double Cab with a full-length backseat and narrow rear doors (now hinged in the front), or a Crew Cab with full-size rear doors and extra rear legroom. Dual rear wheels are available across the board. The Regular and Double Cabs come with an 8-foot bed, while the Crew gets a 6.5-foot bed with the 8-footer available as an option on single-rear-wheel models. Rear bumpers feature corner steps for easier access to the bed.

The standard 6-liter V8 produces 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. You can order a bi-fuel version of the same that runs on either gasoline or compressed natural gas (CNG). When running on CNG, the engine puts out 301 horsepower and 333 pound-feet of torque. Both versions are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

For maximum grunt, Chevy offers a 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8 with 397 horsepower and a pavement-rippling 765 pound-feet of torque. The turbodiesel gets a heavy-duty six-speed automatic and exhaust braking.

All 3500HDs start out with rear-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive is available across the board.

To assist with towing, all models come with a heavy-duty trailing package, an automatic locking rear differential, trailer sway control, automatic grade braking and integrated cruise control that automatically adjusts to load weight. Properly equipped, the 3500HD can tow up to 23,200 pounds (!) and haul 7,374 pounds in back.

The 3500HD is available in three trim levels: the basic WT, popularly equipped LT, luxurious LTZ, and exclusive high Country.

WT (Work Truck)

Comes with your choice of cloth or vinyl upholstery, a front split-bench seat, rubber floor matting (carpeting available), air conditioning, power locks, cruise control, a four-speaker sound system, a chrome front bumper and 17-inch steel wheels. The Double and Crew Cabs also get power windows and two extra speakers. The WT Convenience package adds tinted windows, keyless entry, a remote locking tailgate, a rearview camera, heated power mirrors, and power windows for the Regular Cab.

LT

Gets most of the WT's options as standard, plus the MyLink infotainment system, alloy wheels, Chevy's EZ Lift and Lower tailgate, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The LT can get a Convenience package of its own with a power driver seat, dual-zone climate control (Double and Crew only), remote start, and a rear window defogger. There's also an LT Plus package (Double and Crew only) with power-adjustable pedals, rear parking sensors, and a power-sliding rear window. The new digital assist steering system is standard at this level and above.

LTZ

Available in Double and Crew configurations, the LTZ carries most of the LT's options, plus leather upholstery, front bucket seats with heat and power adjustments, driver memory, dual-zone automatic climate control, an upgraded version of MyLink, an automatic locking rear differential, and a heavy-duty trailering package with an integrated trailer brake controller. The LTZ rolls on 18-inch alloy wheels. You can opt for the LTZ Plus package, which gets you power-adjustable pedals, front parking sensors, and a premium Bose sound system.

High Country

Tops off the 3500HD with a unique grille, body-color bumpers, 20-inch chrome wheels, and a premium leather interior (saddle brown) with ventilated front seats. Options for the High Country include a sunroof, a heated steering wheel, navigation, and a rear video entertainment system.

The LT and above are eligible for Driver Alert Package with lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and a vibrating safety alert seat. All model can be equipped with LED cargo box lighting.

CarsDirect Tip

The WT isn't nearly as austere as it used to be, so it can make a perfectly acceptable personal vehicle with a few options added. Even so, the more scalable LT remains the best overall value for mixed use.
