2016 Ford Expedition EL OVERVIEW

The big and boxy Expedition EL continues to be one of the largest SUVs available today. A spacious interior houses respectable cargo space and a seating capacity of seven or eight, while a powerful V6 engine supports a heavy-duty towing capacity.

What's New for 2016

After a major facelift and numerous updates in 2015, the Expedition EL has only minor changes for 2016.

Choosing Your Ford Expedition EL

Last year brought one of the most important changes the EL model has seen in the form of an upgraded engine. Now standard for all trims is a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 married to a six-speed automatic transmission. This EcoBoost motor generates an impressive 365 horsepower, and when properly equipped the EL can tow up to 9,200 pounds.

Ford offers four different EL models:

XLT

Standard equipment for the base XLT includes 18-inch aluminum wheels, the SYNC entertainment system, power-adjustable foot pedals, cruise control, a rearview camera, remote keyless entry, trailer sway control, traction control, and LED fog lamps.

Equipment group 201A adds 10-way power driver seat and 6-way power passenger seat, power liftgate, heated side mirrors, and leather-trimmed first- and second-row seats. Equipment group 202A gets you heated and cooled front seats, a 10-way power passenger seat, a memory feature for sideview mirrors, remote start, dual-zone climate control, and the SYNC 3 entertainment system with 12 speakers.

The Heavy-Duty Tow Package upgrades the XLT to a class IV trailer hitch, heavy-duty aux transmission oil cooler, wiring harness with 4&7 pin connector and an integrated trailer brake controller. Other options include a blind spot information system, power moonroof, and 20-inch wheels.

Limited

Limited versions include the features of the XLT as well as the Heavy-Duty Tow Package, power liftgate, leather-trimmed, heated and cooled front bucket seats, 20-inch aluminum wheels, power folding third-row seats, SYNC 3 entertainment system, rain-sensing wipers, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated second-row seats, Sony premium audio with 12-speakers, roll stability control, and electronic power assist steering.

Equipment group 301A adds a power moonroof, power running boards, HD radio with navigation, forward and reverse sensing systems, post-crash alert system, and keyless entry keypads. Additional options include dual headrest DVD players, voice-activated navigation with HD radio, and second-row leather-trimmed bucket seats.

King Ranch

Selecting a King Ranch model will get Mesa Brown leather heated and cooled front seats, power running boards, blind spot information system, two-tone bumpers and lower fascia, a full-size spare tire mounted under the body, and voice-activated navigation with HD radio.

Platinum

The Platinum builds on the King Ranch with a power moonroof, premium leather bucket seats in front, leather trimmed second-row seats bench seats, and privacy glass in the rear-quarter.

CarsDirect Tip

Of all the trims, the XLT still offers the best overall value. If you are planning on doing any sort of towing at all, we suggest adding the Heavy-Duty Tow Package. At $560 we feel that it’s a no-brainer.
