The Sierra 3500HD is designed to tackle tough jobs that would humble an ordinary pickup. Even so, it's a civilized beast that can handle comfort-hungry passengers just as well as their trailers and cargo.

What's New for 2016

Most configurations receive a new digital assist steering unit for sharper handling. The IntelliLink infotainment system gets additional features, including greater smartphone integration. A remote locking tailgate joins the equipment list.

Choosing Your Sierra 3500HD

Like all full-size GM pickups, the 3500HD comes with a three-person Regular Cab, a Double Cab with a full-length backseat and narrow rear doors (hinged in front), or a Crew Cab with full-size rear doors and extra rear legroom. Dual rear wheels are available across the board. The Regular and Double Cabs come with an 8-foot bed, while the Crew gets a 6.5-foot bed with the 8-footer available as an option on single-rear-wheel models. Rear bumpers feature corner steps for easier access to the bed.

The standard 6-liter V8 produces 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. You can order a bi-fuel version of the same that runs on either gasoline or compressed natural gas (CNG). When running on CNG, the engine puts out 301 horsepower and 333 pound-feet of torque. Both versions are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

For maximum grunt, GMC offers a 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8 with 397 horsepower and a pavement-rippling 765 pound-feet of torque. The turbodiesel gets a heavy-duty six-speed automatic and exhaust braking. All 3500HDs start out with rear-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive is available across the board.

To assist with towing, all models come with a heavy-duty trailing package, an automatic locking rear differential, trailer sway control, automatic grade braking and integrated cruise control that automatically adjusts to load weight. Properly equipped, the 3500HD can tow up to 23,200 pounds (!) and haul 7,374 pounds in back.

The 3500HD is available in four trim levels: Base, SLE, SLT, and luxurious Denali:

Base

Comes with your choice of cloth or vinyl upholstery, a front split-bench seat, rubber floor matting (carpeting available), air conditioning, power locks, cruise controls, a four-speaker sound system, a chrome front bumper and 17-inch steel wheels. The Double and Crew Cabs also get power windows and two extra speakers. The Convenience package adds tinted windows, keyless entry, a remote locking tailgate, a rearview camera, heated power mirrors, and power windows for the Regular Cab.

SLE

Gets most of the Base options as standard, plus the Intellilink infotainment system, alloy wheels, GMC's EZ Lift and Lower tailgate, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The SLE can get a Convenience package of its own with power-adjustable pedals, rear parking sensors, a power-sliding rear window, and chrome mirror caps. The SLE Preferred package tacks on a power driver seat, remote start, foglamps, a household-style power outlet, a universal garage door opener, and (for Double and Crew) dual-zone climate control. Heated front seats and leather upholstery are optional. The new digital power steering system is standard at this level and above.

SLT

Available in Double and Crew configurations only, the SLT receives standard leather upholstery, front bucket seats with heat and power adjustments, driver memory, automatic climate control, an upgraded version of Intellilink, front parking sensors, a premium Bose sound system, an automatic locking rear differential, and a heavy-duty trailering package with an integrated trailer brake controller. Exclusive to the SLT Crew Cab is an All Terrain package with GMC's Z71 off-road suspension, specific exterior trim, a heated steering wheel, and an inclinometer in the gauge cluster. The Z71 suspension is also available as a standalone option for the SLT and SLE.

Denali

Comes fully loaded with an upgraded leather interior, ventilated front seats, navigation, 20-inch wheels, and unique exterior chrome trim and lighting. A rear video entertainment system is optional. The Denali comes as a Crew Cab only.

The SLE and above are eligible for Driver Alert Package with forward collision warning, lane keeping assist, automatic high beams, and a vibrating safety alert seat.

CarsDirect Tip

The base Sierra isn't nearly as austere as it used to be, so it can make a perfectly acceptable personal vehicle with a few options added. Even so, the more scalable SLE remains the best overall value for mixed use.
