Overview

Lincoln's seven-passenger crossover is probably best known for its distinctive styling, but its high content for the money is what really matters to buyers. The MKT also delivers all of the smoothness and quiet you expect in a passenger-oriented luxury vehicle.

What's New for 2016

The MKT receives a new infotainment interface known as Sync 3.

Lincoln MKT

Choosing Your Lincoln MKT

The MKT offers seating for seven across three rows in its plush cabin, plus 18 cubic feet of cargo space. With the back rows folded, you're looking at 76 cubic feet, above average for this class.

The standard 3.7-liter V6 engine develops 303 horsepower and comes with front-wheel drive only. The optional turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 (dubbed EcoBoost) produces 365 horsepower and comes exclusively with all-wheel drive, an adaptive suspension system, and selectable driving modes. A six-speed automatic transmission with shift paddles is used with both engines.

The MKT is offered in two very well-equipped trim levels that differ in engine and available equipment:

Lincoln MKT

MKT (base)

Gets the 3.7-liter V6 and an abundance of features, including leather upholstery, wood interior trim, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, driver memory, a panoramic sunroof, tri-zone climate control, remote start, a power liftgate, a rearview camera, and rear parking sensors. The 10-speaker sound system features satellite radio and parental controls. The only option for the base MKT is second-row seatbelt airbags.

Lincoln MKT

EcoBoost

Carries the more powerful EcoBoost engine and all-wheel drive. The available Elite package tacks on a power-folding third row, navigation, a heated steering wheel, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The 14-speaker sound system includes HD radio and a six-year subscription to satellite traffic and weather data. Models so equipped are eligible for a Technology package with advanced safety technology like adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and an automated parking system.

Several high-end standalone options are available on the Ecoboost, including second-row captain's chairs (heated and ventilated), a rear console with a refrigerated compartment, and a rear video entertainment system.

CarsDirect Tip

MKT buyers heavily prefer the EcoBoost engine, and we can certainly see why. Besides giving you all-wheel drive and a more composed suspension, the EcoBoost transforms the MKT into one swift luxury cruiser.

With a style all its own, the three-row, seven-passenger 2016 Lincoln MKT provides plenty of nicely appointed interior space for large families. Whether you choose the base 303-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 or the optional 365-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine, Lincoln’s big luxury crossover is an excellent performer with strong acceleration and a smooth ride.

Pricing and Equipment

The 2016 Lincoln MKT is powered by a 3.7-liter V6 engine or an optional 3.5-liter turbocharged Ecoboost V6 engine. Both powerplants are connected to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The MKT is available in two trim levels that determine engine and drive type:

  • The base 3.7-liter V6 is paired with front-wheel drive and starts at $43,370
  • The 3.5-liter Ecoboost with mandatory all-wheel drive is priced from $45,365

Performance Pros

Lincoln MKT

The 2016 Lincoln MKT is powered by a 303-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 with 278 pound-feet of torque. An optional 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged Ecoboost V6 engine produces 365-horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. All MKT models utilize a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters for manual gear selection.

  • Considering that you receive the more powerful Ecoboost engine and the accompanying all-wheel drive system for less than a $2,000 price difference, the top-trim model is quite compelling, especially in colder climates.
  • Fuel economy ranges from 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway for the base 3.7-liter model to 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway for the 3.5-liter.
  • The MKT offers a compliant ride for a three-row crossover. Steering is precise and Ecoboost models add to the formula with a three-mode continuously controlled damping system that works diligently to tame uneven road surfaces.

Performance Cons

Real world fuel economy is rarely up to the suggested numbers.

Interior Pros

Lincoln MKT

Very few vehicles offer the interior space of Lincoln’s three-row MKT. Much like the Ford Flex with which the MKT shares a platform, the six- or seven-passenger crossover excels at offering plenty of room for just about everyone on board. Like the majority of three-row vehicles, the third-row occupants might feel like they have drawn the short straws, but the space is still reasonable.

  • Cargo space is average with all the seats in place, but when used as a four- or five-passenger vehicle, the rear seats fold to provide plenty of room for cargo.
  • Standard features include dual-zone climate control, remote start, heated and cooled twelve-way adjustable front seats, a fixed-panel panoramic sunroof, push-button start, Lincoln’s SYNC infotainment, and more.

Interior Cons

Getting in and out of the third-row seats can be burdensome.

The Most Pleasant Surprise

The 2016 Lincoln MKT provides an extremely quiet interior, even under full-throttle conditions.

The Least Pleasant Surprise

It’s a little hard to get around the Lincoln MKT’s polarizing looks. I want to love it, but that grille just doesn’t work for me.

The Bottom Line

Lincoln MKT

With plenty of power, excellent handling and a quiet comfortable ride, the 2016 Lincoln MKT is an excellent choice for families looking for a luxury mini-van alternative. Many of my recent experiences with the MKT have been in the second row—it turns out the MKT, which makes for an excellent limo, has essentially replaced Lincoln’s storied Town Car in airport shuttle fleets.

While the exterior styling may not be for everyone, the look certainly is unique and might just make the unique fashion statement you’re looking for.
