2016 Mazda Mazda2: News, Updates, Release Date

, Senior Pricing Analyst - July 30, 2015

Model Overview

Unfortunately, the redesigned Mazda Mazda2 has been put on hiatus for the 2015 model year.

While the European market gets the newest version (pictured), U.S. shoppers may be in for a long wait. According to Mazda, low gas prices and a shift toward crossovers have compelled the automaker to focus their marketing efforts on cars like the 2016 CX-3 crossover and redesigned 2016 MX-5 Miata.

The last Mazda2 sold in the U.S. was the now sold-out 2014 model. Interestingly, that doesn't mean the Mazda2 won't continue to live on. For example, the CX-3 may be a crossover but will in fact be built on the same platform as the new Mazda2.

Shoppers wary of crossovers get another alternative in the form of the 2016 Scion iA jointly developed by Toyota and Mazda. If preliminary reviews are an indication, the Mazda2 is in fact alive and well under the Scion badge, with a surprisingly engaging driving experience.

The iA with automatic is about $1,265 more expensive than the 2014 Mazda2 with automatic but has a spacious sedan layout with a more premium interior. At $17,570 for the automatic (including destination), we think the iA might be worth a look.
