The Toyota Camry Hybrid combines the spacious interior and responsive drive of its namesake with the technology and efficiency of the Prius. The result is an even more practical version of America’s favorite midsize sedan.
Having undergone a thorough redesign in 2015, changes to the Camry Hybrid this year are minor.
When it comes to selecting your Camry Hybrid, engine choice will be easy. They all feature the same 2.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline-electric hybrid engine, which produces 200 horsepower.
As for mileage, the Hybrid LE delivers up to 43 mpg city/39 mpg highway, while the sporty Hybrid SE and XLE offer up to 40 mpg city/38 mpg highway.
An energy monitor displays real-time information on how power is being routed or how the battery is being charged. All Camry Hybrids also feature three selectable driving modes that allow you to choose between Normal, EV and ECO mode. These modes affect how the cars drive, including determining the ratio of electricity to gas used by the engine.
The LE sets a solid base by including all the equipment expected in a car of this segment such as: 8-way power adjustable seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, an integrated backup camera, Entune audio with a 6.1-inch touch screen display and keyless entry with push-button start. There are no additional options that can be added at this level, but it is well equipped at $26,800.
With 17-inch alloy wheels, a stiffer sport-tuned suspension, rear spoiler, and leather trimmed steering wheel, the SE is Toyota’s opportunity to inject a bit of fun into the hybrid experience. Additional options include a power tilt/slide moonroof, Entune Audio Plus with navigation, Entune Premium Audio, and Qi-compatible wireless smartphone charging.
Moving to the XLE gets you the most luxurious Camry Hybrid experience available. Features include leather upholstery, heated front seats, Entune Audio Plus with navigation and SiriusXM features, LED daytime running lights, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and 17-inch alloy wheels. Optional packages build on each other and include features like a power tilt/slide moonroof, Entune Premium JBL Audio with navigation, blind spot monitor, Qi-compatible wireless smartphone charging and more.
Last year marked the first time that the Camry Hybrid could be purchased in SE trim, offering the responsibility of fuel economy with a more engaging drive. Those looking for that kind of marriage may well find that Hybrid SE is the ride for them
